The Purdue track and field teams swept the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week awards for the second time after as many meets this year. Dani Bunch and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi each picked up their second award of the season.
Enekwechi opened Saturday afternoon with the weight throw. On his fifth attempt, the sophomore broke the Purdue school record and Lambert Fieldhouse facility record with a mark of 22.25m (73-00.00). The mark beats Enekwechi’s own program mark of 22.19m (72-09.50) which he threw at the Mastodon Opener last month. His throw from the weekend is the nation’s best by 9.5 inches.
In the shot put, Enekwechi also threw a personal record, as he won the event with a mark of 18.87m (61-11.00). That distance moves him up to fourth place on the all-time Purdue list and is also the eighth-best throw in the country this year.
Bunch won a pair of events on the women’s side for the Boilermakers. The senior opened with the weight throw where she took the top spot with a mark of 21.07m (69-01.50). That mark is better than any by another thrower in the country this year, though it is not her season best. Bunch threw 21.72m (71-03.25) at the Mastodon Opener last month which is the top mark nationally. She is the only thrower in the country this year to record a throw over 21m and has done so in both meets.
In the shot put, Bunch broke her own school record with a throw of 16.92m (55-06.25). The mark was not only good enough to win the event, but it is also the second-best throw in the country this year.
The Boilermakers return to action on Saturday with the Purdue/Indiana Dual. The event is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. inside Lambert Fieldhouse.
