WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) – Four members of Purdue swimming and diving were recognized with Big Ten weekly awards for the second week in a row, highlighted by Carly Mercer’s third Swimmer of the Week honor of the season.
Along with Mercer, Jamie Bissett and Michelle Cabassol swept the Diver of the Week awards. Meagan Lim repeated as the women’s Freshman of the Week winner. Together, Bissett, Cabassol, Lim and Mercer teamed up for 12 individual event victories during Purdue’s back-to-back home dual meets against Michigan and Michigan State.
Mercer is the first Purdue woman to win Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors three times in the same season since the Big Ten switched from a monthly to weekly format beginning with the 1998-99 season. She also garnered the award Nov. 12 and Nov. 26. Around the Big Ten this season, Michigan’s Allie DeLoof has also been recognized three times.
Bissett and Cabassol each won their second Big Ten Diver of the Week awards of the season. They were both also recognized in October. It was Bissett’s third career Diver of the Week honor overall. Casey Matthews and Cabassol have teamed up to claim five Diver of the Week awards this season for the Purdue women.
Lim joins Minnesota’s Breanne Siwicki, a three-time honoree, as the only women around the Big Ten so far this season to win multiple Freshman of the Week awards. Filip Bujoczek has also been recognized as the men’s Freshman of the Week twice this season for the Purdue men.
Mercer won a pair of individual events in each of the dual meet victories against No. 24 Michigan and Michigan and contributed to three of the Boilers’ four relay wins on the weekend as well. She continues to lead the team with 14 individual victories this season. She swept the freestyle sprints against Michigan and demonstrated her versatility against Michigan State, winning the 200 IM and finishing second in the 100 back to go along with another victory in the 50 free.
Bissett won three of the four men’s diving events as Purdue split its duals with No. 1 Michigan and Michigan State. His 1-meter victory Friday vs. the Wolverines was his first since the November Quad meet. The junior followed that up with a sweep of the diving events against Michigan State. He has posted five event victories this season.
After finishing as the runner-up to Casey Matthews in both women’s diving events against Michigan, Cabassol posted personal season-best scores (313.73 and 364.14) Saturday while sweeping the springboard events. She recorded her first victories since Oct. 26.
Lim won three butterfly races over the course of the weekend, increasing her season total for individual victories to eight. She swept the fly events against Michigan State and also won the 100 fly to help Purdue win its dual with Michigan that featured a pair of nationally-ranked teams.
The No. 20 Purdue women are a perfect 7-0 in duals this season, highlighted by tightly-contested wins against Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan. Upcoming duals with Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin in the coming weeks will also feature formidable opponents. The Boilers are idle until their Jan. 25 dual at No. 11 Indiana.
Selected members of the Purdue men will compete this weekend at the Classic at SMU. Bissett and the rest of the Boilers not traveling to Dallas will be back in action at the next home meet, the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Minnesota and Wisconsin will visit West Lafayette for the first time since 2011.
