Never-before-seen Challenger pics emerge

(CNN/MICHAEL HINDES) – We’re getting a look at photos you’ve never seen before of a tragic space shuttle crash 28 years ago.

Michael Hindes found these pictures of the Space Shuttle Challenger while going through boxes of his grandparents’ old photographs.

Hindes discovered 26 photos in all, showing the shuttle on the platform, its launch, and the tragic explosion as it climbed into the sky.

The 1986 explosion killed all seven crew members onboard, including teacher Christa McAuliffe.

Hindes’ grandfather worked for NASA and got the pictures from a co-worker.

Hindes says his grandfather showed the pictures to others, but they were eventually put with other photos and forgotten. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
