The Columbian Park Zoo is currently accepting applications for the 2014 Junior Zookeeper program. Applications must be submitted before Feb. 27.
Zoo officials said the program is a wonderful opportunity for teens to get a hands-on look at the zoo-keeping profession. The Junior Zookeeper program is available to teenagers ages 14 to 17.
Junior Zookeepers will assist with various projects around the zoo, including educational programs and interacting with zoo patrons. Some other tasks include feeding, grooming, enclosure cleaning, exercising and observing some of the animals.
Training sessions will be held on Saturdays throughout the months of April and May. Participants will be required to volunteer eight hours per week from June 1 to Aug. 8.
If you are interested in the Junior Zookeeper program, applications are available at the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Administration Office or online. Zoo officials said space is limited in the program.
Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Feb. 27. Those chosen to participate must be able to attend a mandatory group interview, which will take place on either March 1 or March 9.
