INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Senate has given unanimous approval to a measure allowing local governments to support military bases.

The measure sponsored by Sen. Jim Banks of Columbia City would let local governments provide grants or loans for construction and other measures supporting military bases.

Banks said Tuesday he is hoping the measure can help Fort Wayne retain the Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing. Banks said the base could face closure in 2016, potentially costing jobs for hundreds of people in northeastern Indiana. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
