MIDDLEBURY, Ind. (WSBT) – A manhunt is happening right now for a convicted killer who escaped from a Grand Rapids-area jail Sunday night.

His name is Michael David Elliot and he escaped from the Ionia County Jail around 9 last night.

His last known location was a Gallop’s gas station in Middlebury, Ind.

Elliot is serving a life term for killing four people.

Police tell us, after he escaped, he carjacked a woman near Lansing using a knife or box cutter and then drove with her to a Middlebury gas station.

Police told our CBS affiliate in South Bend, WSBT-TV, they both went into the gas station to pay for gas. She went to the bathroom and locked herself inside and called 911.

Elliot got nervous and left before officers showed up, but police do not know where he was headed.

The victim was unharmed.

Elliot was last seen driving a 2004 red Jeep Liberty with Michigan license plate 5FTG55. Michigan State Police say it has a black grill cover on the front. On the back it has a spare tire and a Taz, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck sticker.

He is 40 years old, about 5-foot-8, a medium build with brown hair and brown eyes. He may have short hair and a beard, and was last seen wearing a black or blue hooded sweatshirt.
