LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)- A reduction in funding is forcing Mental Health America to reduce its day shelter hours. The cut in the shelter’s hours will go into effect on Monday.

MHA Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Flora said they anticipated a small budget cut. Instead, she said they did not receive any money from a $25,000 federal grant they were planning on this year.

Flora said it has put the shelter more than $12,000 below its annual budget.

“Even though that funding was directed completely for the day shelter, in a small organization, if one area is impacted, quite often there will be other areas of the agency that will be impacted too,” said Flora.

During the winter months, MHA’s day shelter will now be open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Flora said the hours are broken up to help as many people as possible. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
