WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – It’s been a busy winter for plows and a tough one for drivers. This constant ice and snow can put a strain on your vehicle.

Slide offs, fender-benders and sub-zero temperatures are causing car owners to make a trip to their local mechanic.

Jim Lewis of Mr. and Mrs. Tire in West Lafayette said the harsher than normal winter is keeping his garage bays full.

“We don’t want anybody to get hurt. We would just as soon see people do their maintenance on a regular basis to not see them in an emergency,” said Lewis. “It’s something people don’t want to sink a bunch of money into to repair their car because they’ve had a slide off or something like that.”

Lewis said tire and battery replacement top the list of problems he sees at his shop. He said potholes have also been damaging suspensions.

He said even though business is good, he does not like to see people stranded or late to work because of the weather.

“It’s a winter that we haven’t seen for quite some time,” Lewis said. “Basically, we’ve gone four winters without having really bad weather, so we have four winters with young kids that haven’t had any winter driving experience. Which makes a big difference. People still drive a little too fast because they’re just not used to having all the snow and ice on the road.”

Lewis said his crew is also fixing a high number of leaky radiators. He advises people get their fluids checked on a regular basis even during warmer months. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
