RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) — An eastern Indiana nonprofit agency will spay and neuter 1,000 cats after receiving a $23,250 grant.

The Animal Care Alliance at the HELP The Animals shelter and clinic in Richmond recently received the grant from PetSmart Charities.

Clinic manager Joyce Luckett tells the Palladium-Item ( ) that her agency received the grant in late December and already has spayed and neutered more than 100 stray cats. She says the clinic will perform nearly 5,000 spays and neuters of cats and dogs overall this year and will use the grant money on alley cats, stray cats and any other free roaming cats.

Luckett said grant dollars can used in Richmond, Centerville and Cambridge City in Wayne County and Lynn and Winchester in Randolph County.
