LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – The Lafayette Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 100 block of S. Eighth Street, just before 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Neighbors reported hearing a single gunshot around 5:40 a.m. When officers arrived, they found one male with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder.

LPD said initial reports describe the person of interest as a black male with braids or dreadlocks, fleeing south on Eighth Street in a black vehicle.

Police said no blood or shell casings were found at the scene, nor was there evidence of tire tracks.

The victim was taken to Franciscan St. Elizabeth East, with what police said appear to be non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities believe the shooting was targeted and not a random act. The name of the victim has not been released.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information are asked to contact the Lafayette Police Department at 765-807-1200 or use the anonymous WeTip Hotline at 800-78-CRIME.
