INDIANAPOLIS (WLFI) – The Indiana Department of Transportation is asking lawmakers to use money for highway projects earlier than what was planned.

INDOT asked the state Senate Appropriations Committee to approve the release of $400 million saved in a special trust fund. The fund was created last year and lawmakers planned to put $200 million per year into the fund. They expected to have $1 billion in 2020.

Committee Chairman Sen. Luke Kenley of Noblesville said he is reluctant to get into the savings early.

However, Gov. Mike Pence supports INDOT’s request to use the money early. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
