One dead after West Lafayette house fire

WEST LAFAYETTE (WLFI) – One woman is dead after an early hour house fire in West Lafayette.

Wabash Township Volunteer Fire Department public information officer Kevin McCombs said the call came in around 1:48 a.m. Sunday. He says when firefighters arrived, they saw the front part of the home engulfed and heard reports of one person inside the home. A request for mutual aid was made to the West Lafayette Fire Department.

“They were able to get a quick knock down to get inside and retrieve the victim. They were still on scene for quite an extended period of time, due to there being a victim inside and the fire was still flaring up,” said McCombs.

He reported that when firefighters found the victim inside the home they attempted to resuscitate her. The woman was then taken to a Lafayette area hospital where was later pronounced dead.

McCombs said the cause of the fire has not been determined. Since the fire proved to be fatal,  it is protocol to have the fire marshal’s office and sheriff’s office take over the investigation.

The woman’s name has not been released.
