LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Lafayette police are investigating the death of a man on Union Street. Officers believe his death is the result of a hit-and-run.

Police said it happened around 8:45 Tuesday night in the eastbound lanes of the 2200 block of Union Street. When officers arrived, they found a man with injuries, including one to the head. A short time later, he was pronounced dead by medics.

A witness has provided a description of the vehicle police think was involved, but at this time, investigators are not releasing much information about that vehicle. There are some pieces of a car near the scene and police said the vehicle in question may have damage to the hood and headlights on the front, passenger side.

Before getting emergency calls about the pedestrian hit, police got at least one report of a person walking in the street. They’re not sure if it was the same person.

The Lafayette Police Department’s crash reconstruction team has been called to the scene.

Union Street was closed Tuesday night, between 21st and 26th streets, until around 11 p.m.
