WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Vectren officials have issued a warning to Indiana residents that falling ice could lead to gas leaks.

Vectren officials said on Tuesday they had a few isolated cases of melting icicles and chunks of snow and ice falling on and damaging gas meter sets, causing a gas leak issue.

To prevent a gas leak, customers should clear the icicles from the over-hanging areas, but only if possible.

Officials said if the gas meter is covered in ice, do not attempt to melt or chip the ice, because it could cause damage to the meter. Officials say let the ice melt on its own.

If ice falls and damages your meter or you suspect a gas leak, customers should call Vectren immediately at 800-227-1376. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
