WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Purdue student’s date last weekend didn’t go quite as expected. The date turned out to be a man and electronic items went missing.

West Lafayette police said the student had met what he thought was a woman on the internet dating site plentyoffish.com

The student drove to Boswell to pick up his date. After going out to eat and returning to the student’s apartment, police said the student found out his date was really a male.

After letting the man sleep on the couch, the student woke up the next day missing an iPad and iPhone.

Police said a similar incident involving another Purdue student happened the previous weekend.

West Lafayette Detective Troy Harris said people need to be more cautious with dating websites.

“It can be a great service. But at the same time, you have to be a bit guarded, use some good common sense and do some research on who this person may really be,” said Harris.

West Lafayette police say they are working with Boswell Police to figure out the identify of their suspect.
