SULLIVAN, Ind. (AP) — One person has died and 18 others have been injured in a fire at a southwestern Indiana apartment building.

Sullivan Fire Chief Rob Robertson tells the Sullivan Daily Times that smoke inhalation caused the death in the fire Thursday afternoon at Sunrise Towers just north of downtown in the city 80 miles southwest of Indianapolis. The name of the victim was not immediately released.

A nursing supervisor at Sullivan County Community Hospital says it has treated 18 people for injuries including smoke inhalation. She says some of those injured were coming in for treatment hours after the fire began shortly after noon.

The seven-story building was evacuated, with residents going to a nearby apartment complex and school gymnasiums.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
