MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) – Firefighters release further information on the cause of Wednesday’s fire at a White County resort.

Monticello firefighters said the fire at the Outrigger Resort on N. West Shafer Drive, just past the north entrance to Indiana Beach, started in a laundry room storage area.

Monticello Assistant Fire Chief Robert Hickman said the cause has been ruled undetermined, yet accidental.

Hickman said the fire started near a space heater. But because the people staying there said it was off at the time, they cannot rule it out or confirm it as the cause.

According to Hickman, the resort usually sits empty during the winter, but that’s not the case this year.

“They were able to rent it out to a construction company called Midwest Constructors out of Indianapolis,” Hickman said. “They have crews working over at the Magnetation plant in Reynolds and their folks were staying here.”

Workers were not in the building at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

Firefighters said the fire was contained to the laundry room.
