MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) – In an attempt to make Saturday extra fun for students, Oaklawn Elementary School Principal Jennifer Lingenfelter told them to come in their favorite work-out gear.
“We had invited our kids to wear work-out gear [on Saturday] because we’re having an extra brain workout,” Lingenfelter said.
Twin Lakes School Corporation held Saturday school to help make up its 11 snow days this year. Superintendent Tom Fletcher said he left it up to the schools’ principals to decide on the Saturday to hold classes.
“After several meetings they came up with [Saturday's] date because ISTEP starts for us next week,” Fletcher said.
The ISTEP testing window opened March 3, and has been extended to give teachers more time to prepare their students after snow days kept them from doing so.
Lingenfelter said on Saturday her students focused heavily on the subjects the ISTEP covers, math and English and language arts.
“We felt like it would be more beneficial for them to attend school prior to the ISTEP test rather than adding on more days in June,” Lingenfelter said.
Fletcher said the day ran normally. Even attendance numbers were near normal.
“We have 2,423 students at Twin Lakes schools, and there are 2,160 kids in attendance,” Fletcher said. “I wanted to get 90 percent, but it’s 89 percent.
Twin Lakes graduation is June 8. If school is canceled again, there are two more Saturday schools in the calendar.
