Twin Lakes students surprise teacher with trip to Grand Canyon

MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) – Students at Twin Lakes High School are helping a teacher take the trip of her dreams after nearly a year-long battle with breast cancer.

Multiple Twin Lakes student groups held fundraisers in order to send math teacher April Church and her husband to see the Grand Canyon.

Student Council members surprised Church with tickets in front of the entire school. Church was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer. She says going to the Grand Canyon has always been on her bucket list.

“This summer I was supposed to go out and play golf and things, but that was the day I couldn’t go because I was sick. And so, since then it’s just been a joke and now its like reality. It’s not a joke. I can’t wait.” said Church.

Church has been teaching at Twin Lakes for 29 years. Twin Lakes students created the Twin Lakes High School Cares Fund to help other teachers in the future. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
