SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — South Bend officials are warning residents that two homeowners have reported receiving misleading notifications that their homes were slated for demolition and offering to buy the properties for cash.

Mayor’s spokeswoman Kara Kelly says neither home was on the city’s demolition list. She says the demolition process is lengthy, marked by multiple notifications, public notices and hearings.

The South Bend Tribune reports the notices were sent by Gem Enterprises of South Bend. Gem Enterprises owner Dan Hoff says his intent was not to mislead anyone. He says the homes he sent the fliers to were included in an online database of vacant and abandoned homes.

The Tribune reports some homes on the list were simply out of compliance with city code. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
