Family of three escape house fire in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) –  A Montgomery County home was gutted by fire Wednesday afternoon, but the family says they are just thankful no one was hurt.

Carrie Ethington says she was taking a bath while her husband Kendall and 18-month-old son James were taking a nap. She says she quickly grabbed a robe and grabbed James after hearing Kendall yell that there was a fire in the house.

Both doors in the house were engulfed in flames at the time so Ethington said her family had to escape through a window. She said they got as far away as possible from home because of heavy smoke before calling family who alerted local fire departments.

“I’m very thankful that we were okay. I remember I was holding my son really tight cause I was just glad he was in my arms. Looking up at the house I just can’t believe it,” said Ethington.

Support from close family and friends is helping her feel better about the situation. Ethington said she’s not sure what’s next for her family, but knows they have options for places to stay in the midterm.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
