MIAMI CO., Ind. (WLFI) – A plea deal that would have seen a Mississippi man plead guilty to killing a Miami County woman more than 20 years ago is rejected by a judge.

Timothy Jimerson faced a 30-year sentence if the judge had accepted the plea agreement. The deal called for Jimerson to plead guilty to a voluntary manslaughter charge for the 1992 strangulation death of 27-year-old Toni Spicer.

Prosecutor Bruce Embrey said the deal was the best chance of getting a conviction. Jimerson was arrested in 2012 after DNA testing linked him to the killing.

Judge Tim Spahr said he believed the attack merited a longer sentence.
