LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Money can be nice, but learning how to manage your money can make it even sweeter. Coming up next month, a week will be devoted to helping everyone in the community manage their money.

Money Smart Week is a nationwide event beginning April 5. In Lafayette, events will be held at Ivy Tech Community College.

Events include teaching veterans about V.A. benefits, a smart home buyer course and a lesson on how to get rich slowly.

Even elementary school students can get an early lesson in managing money. Amanda Rubeck is in charge of the kids’ event, where children will learn how to manage money with a virtual pet.

“They’ll get a virtual pet that they can walk through,” Rubeck said. “They come up with the different wants and needs of that pet. They’ll go through budgeting food expenses, veterinarian costs and also how to save money back. So maybe, they can take their pet on a vacation.”
