PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – An Indiana State Police Trooper came upon a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 70 involving serious injuries of a Terre Haute man.

Preliminary investigation showed a 2007 Chevrolet van driven by Scott A. Dixon, 55 of Terre Haute, was eastbound on I-70 near mile marker 41 when he lost control of the vehicle while crossing a small bridge.

Ice on the bridge may have been a factor.

Dixon’s van crossed the median and struck the trailer of a semi being driven by Darrell E. Smith, 65 of Illinois. When the ISP trooper arrived at the scene, he radioed for medical and rescue assistance and then began administering first aid.

Dixon had to be extricated from the vehicle and suffered serious head, chest, internal and upper extremity injuries.

He was taken to Regional Hospital in Terre Haute and was scheduled to be transferred by air to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Officials report drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
