WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) – Freshman designated player Katy McJunkin was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week alongside Minnesota’s Sara Groenewegen.
McJunkin led the Purdue bats with a .667 average, including a .727 on-base percentage, 1.000 slugging percentage and three RBI against Michigan State last weekend. In the series opener, the freshman went 3-for-3, including the game-winning RBI triple in the fourth inning. She added a hit and a walk in Game 1 of Sunday’s twin bill and finished the weekend with a 2-for-4 effort including a double and two runs in the finale.
The Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor is the first for McJunkin and the first for Purdue since pitcher Lexy Moore was so honored on April 2, 2012. It is the third weekly award for a Boilermaker in 2014 along with junior first baseman Ashley Burkhardt (Co-Player of the Week, Feb. 18), and Tori Chiodo (Player of the Week, March 22).
The Boilermakers (18-17-1, 5-1 Big Ten) continue play this weekend when they take on the Indiana Hoosiers in a three-game slate in West Lafayette. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Friday. All tickets to the event are just $1 on All-4-1 Day. Saturday’s 1 p.m. contest with IU has been designated as the Boiler Blackout game. Fans are encouraged to don black as the Boilers battle the Hoosiers. Sunday’s noon game is Youth Team Day. Tickets are just $1 for youth eighth grade and under when they wear their youth team’s jersey to the game.
