LPD K-9 who helped arrest hundreds retires

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Old age is forcing a veteran of the Lafayette Police Department to retire after more than seven years on the job, but that’s almost 40 in dog years.

K-9 officer Jarca and handler Ofc. Ryan French were honored at Monday’s city council meeting.

Over her time on the force, she helped seize more than 49 pounds of marijuana and $50,000 cash in drug-related seizures. She also has helped arrest hundreds of criminals.

“I’ve been the most lucky officer in the department. This is a great job, not only to be a police officer, but to be a K-9 handler just makes it that much better,” said Ofc. French.

Jarca will now live with the French family as their pet.

Ofc. French has applied for the K-9 officer position that is currently open at LPD.
