INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Public safety officials in Indianapolis said Thursday night that two members of IMPD are dead following an apparent murder-suicide on the city’s northwest side.
Police responded to a home near W. 21st Street and N. Girls School Road around 5:40 p.m. Initial reports from officers were that the incident was in the 2400 block of Inishmore Court.
IMPD Chief Rick Hite said in a press conference Thursday night that when officers got to the scene, they discovered forced entry had been made to the rear of the home. Inside, officers found two IMPD employees dead in an apparent murder-suicide. They have been identified as Sgt. Ryan Anders and Officer Kim Carmack.
Chief Hite said a protective order was issued for Anders, at the request of Carmack, his ex-wife. Hite said the incident appears to have stemmed from a domestic incident.
“We have a grieving police department,” Hite said, “and a grieving family.”
Hite said no one else was involved in the incident but Anders. He said counseling would be provided through the Fraternal Order of Police.
Mayor Greg Ballard also spoke at the press conference.
“It’s a very difficult day in Indianapolis,” Ballard said. “We have lost two of our own.”
Director of Public Safety Troy Riggs added, “We have over 1,500 police officers. All of which have been touched tonight.”
No further information about the incident was expected to be released Thursday night.
