Green thumbs needed for Arbor Day planting

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Tree Lafayette needs volunteers for its annual Arbor Day planting.

Tree Lafayette has been planting trees and beautifying Greater Lafayette for more than 20 years. This year’s Arbor Day planting is at Glen Acres Elementary School.

It will be held Saturday, May 3 starting at 9 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. Volunteers will plant trees and receive a free sapling for participating.

Glen Acres Principal Megan Hatke said students are excited about helping the community.

“The fact that they’re going to get to actually plant the trees, and the fact that they’re going to see them grow throughout the years,” Hatke said. “They’ll come back (and) they’ll get to say, ‘hey, I helped plant that tree and look how big it is now.'”

Joseph Fowler with Tree Lafayette Marketing Committee said it makes children really excited.

“They’re astonished when they learn about roots (or) learn about what a tree can provide and how a tree can help them,” Fowler said. “And, once they learn that — they get really excited about helping.”

Volunteers can sign up online at the Tree Lafayette website, or at the school the day of the event. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, May 3.
