MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) – A woman was safe Friday after a bedroom in her Monticello home went up in flames.

Assistant Fire Chief Robert Hickman said the fire happened around 4:15 p.m. in the 300 block of Ohio Street.

Crews arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the single-story home. Firefighters were able to contain the heat and flames of the fire to the bedroom.

The female resident was on her back porch when she heard her smoke alarm go off.  She went inside to investigate, found the fire and made it back outside safely.

Firefighters said the home is unlivable at this time, but the damage can be repaired.

The cause of the house fire remains under investigation.
