WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Rush hour traffic around Purdue’s campus was severely backed up after a hazardous materials situation around Memorial Mall Thursday evening.

Purdue firefighters said a CityBus sprung a hydraulic leak shortly after 6 p.m., creating an oil slick about four feet wide around portions of Oval Drive, State Street and University Avenue to Beering Hall where the bus stopped.

Investigators aren’t sure if it was a transmission or steering fluid leak.

At times, traffic backed up all the way down Chauncey Hill to the Levee area.

Crews laid Oil-Dri on the road, then used a street sweeper to sweep up the mess.

The scene was cleared about 8:30 p.m.
