Fatal crash closes State Street for more than two hours


LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Lafayette police said 22-year-old Jared Osting of Lafayette was killed Friday afternoon after a crash near the intersection of South Street and Creasy Lane.

Police said the driver of an SUV was eastbound on South, thought there was no traffic and turned left into the Lowe’s parking lot when he heard squealing tires and felt his vehicle get hit around 4 p.m.

Investigators believe Jared Osting was driving his motorcycle west on South when he slowed rapidly and laid it down. Both the motorcycle and Osting hit the SUV.

Osting was taken to Fransican St. Elizabeth East Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Osting was not wearing a helmet. His motorcycle came to rest about 60 yards from the spot of the crash.

The westbound lanes of South were closed until 6:35 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
