WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) – Sophomore Lilly Fecho pitched a two-hitter and the Boilermakers score a pair of home runs in a 3-0 win over No. 12 Minnesota on Friday. The win is Purdue’s third over a ranked foe this season and their seventh Big Ten series opening win in 2014.

Fecho (20-13) struck out eight and allowed just two hits in the complete-game victory. Sara Groenewegen issued 14 Ks in the complete-game effort for Minnesota, but allowed the Boilers three runs on four hits.

Seniors Andie Varsho and Danielle Fletcher, junior Ashley Burkhardt and sophomore Paris Andrew accounted for Purdue’s hits.

Fletcher gave Purdue its first hit with a leadoff single to shallow center in the second. Senior Maia Monchek joined her on base with a two-out hit by pitch, but the Boilers came up empty.

Minnesota managed a one-out single in the third, but left a strikeout and line out left the runner stranded.

Burkhardt put Purdue on the board, lifting a home run to left center to kick off the fourth inning. The long ball was Bukrhardt’s ninth of the season.

Varsho gave the Boilers a pair of insurance runs in the fifth with a two-out home run to left center. The deep ball, Varsho’s fifth of the year, scored Andrew, who doubled to the left center gap and was waiting at third after wild pitch.

The Gophers got a leadoff double in the sixth, but two strikeouts and a pop up erased the threat.

Fecho forced a ground out, a fly out and then recorded her eighth strikeout to cap the shutout win in the seventh.

The Boilermakers (26-25-1, 13-8 Big Ten) and Gophers (36-9, 14-6 Big Ten) face off again at 1 p.m. Saturday. It’s Service Day at the ballpark. All police, fire, EMT, military and hospital personnel get in for just $1.
