Tree Lafayette celebrates Arbor Day

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – More than 200 volunteers helped plant 70 trees at Glen Acres Elementary School Saturday morning as part of Tree Lafayette’s Arbor Day.

A variety of tree species were planted by 4-H members, Boy and Girl Scout troops and community members. Trees were put around the school, as well as along the trail toward Munger Park during the annual event.

Tree Lafayette has planted trees throughout Greater Lafayette for the past 21 years.

Luis Ojeda, a fourth-grader and student council president at Glen Acres, was one of several students who helped out.

He said it was a good feeling to know that he could come back years from now with fellow students to see the fruits of their labor.

“It feels like an honor. To plant a tree in my own school, and to be able to come visit it, to recognize it, it feels good,” said Ojeda.

Activities for children and workshops were held following tree planting inside the school.
