Trails of Hope Camp wraps up 12th year

Trails of Hopes Grief Camp

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A one-day camp is teaching children ways to grieve the other 364 days of the year.

The Trails of Hope Camp held its 12th annual camp this weekend in Tippecanoe County. The camp is for children ages 7 to 17 who have experienced a traumatic loss.

Board member Carmen Balfour said the camp was the idea of community leaders and grief experts, who agreed at the time there were very little resources in the area for grieving children.

Balfour said it is a fun camp experience, but every activity includes a lesson on dealing with a loss.

“For example, a lot of the arts and crafts can be [based] around expressions of grief,” Balfour said. “This camp we made a shield, and on the shield [the kids] could write words that are helpful to them in dealing with their grief.”

The camp also includes an optional session for parents and caretakers after they drop the children off for the day. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
