MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) — Fire has destroyed what authorities say was a closed church in southwestern Indiana.

The fire broke out early Thursday at the church in a rural area of Posey County a few miles north of Mount Vernon.

Officials tell WFIE-TV that they don’t believe anyone was inside the building at the time of the fire. The flames leveled the wood structure, leaving only a pile of burned rubble.

Officials say one firefighter was hit in the head at the scene and was taken to an Evansville hospital to be checked out. A cause of the fire wasn’t immediately determined. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
