Three area bands, 1 orchestra, 1 choir ‘play’ for championship

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Three area high schools are taking aim at a state championship this weekend. They’ll need just as much teamwork and control as a traditional athlete.

The Harrison Wind Ensemble is heading to the state finals Saturday, its first appearance since 2011 and sixth time overall.

They’ll be joined by the Jeff and West Lafayette wind ensembles, along with 13 other bands from around the state.

“This is so significant for us, but also for the whole community. I don’t think there’s another city in the state outside Indianapolis that could say they have this many groups that are going into the state finals for music. And that’s significant,” said Harrison band director Steve Cotten.

It’s not just area bands in this year’s finals.

The West Lafayette Symphony Orchestra is competing against seven others around the state, as well as the Jeff Varsity Singers in the choir division which is led by Golden Apple award winner Michael Bennett.
