WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Police said an intoxicated Purdue student falsely reported that shots were fired at a West Lafayette apartment complex. Officers did not take the report lightly because of the deadly shooting on campus in January.

Friday evening, a caller reported that he saw two suspects with weapons inside Chauncey Square apartments. Chauncey Square is located on N. Chauncey Avenue, west of N. Salisbury Street. When the West Lafayette Police Department arrived on scene, officers met with the caller. He was identified as Patrick Boudewyns. Boudewyns then told officers he heard a shot fired inside the apartment complex.

As officers knocked on doors and searched the building, Boudewyns’ story started to change. Officers also realized he was heavily intoxicated. Police could not find any evidence that there was any truth to the report.

Boudewyns was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of false informing. He was booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail and was being held on a $257 bond.

Police said because of the deadly shooting on campus earlier this year, the report was taken very seriously
