LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Real trains passed right outside the window as smaller models circled tracks inside the historic Big Four Depot in downtown Lafayette on Saturday as part of National Train Day.

The Tippecanoe County Historical Association was joined by the Central Indiana N-trak model train club to commemorate the event. The train club had a 30-foot layout compete with model buildings.

Members of the club aged from eight to 88, but all enjoy different facets of being around trains — whether building the trains, decorating the scenery, or like president Jeffrey Johnson, running the trains themselves.

“I joined the club to come and run trains. It’s just fun to operate. It’s fun to see the kids’ faces as they observe the trains, and just see their faces light up,” said Johnson.

The historical association also had their trailer full of train memorabilia and other information handouts for visitors. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
