Breathalyzer testing for Jeff students at random events

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Jeff students will have to pass random Breathalyzer tests at random school events starting in the fall.

The Lafayette School Board passed a measure Monday night allowing Jeff High School to test students who are attending extracurricular activities including football and basketball games and dances.

Superintendent Les Huddle said both the event and students selected will be on a random basis.

“It’s going to be random. We have not had a problem in the past. So, it is there only as a deterrent not as an every Friday night activity at a Jeff High School football game,” said Huddle.

Initially, the policy proposal called for testing every student who attended a school dance.

Huddle said the language was changed after some internal discussions as well as conversations with Jeff administrators.
