LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Construction of a new paint shop is underway at Subaru of Indiana Automotive.

Officials broke ground Monday afternoon for the new 300,000 square-foot facility. The new paint shop is one of three planned construction projects, as Subaru gets set for its 2016 expansion. Officials estimate the projects will cost more than $400 million.

Once completed, SIA Executive Vice President Tom Easterday said the projects will allow them to build an additional 100,000 cars annually.

“SIA has about 3.4 million square feet now. So when you add in another half a million square feet more, we’re going to almost be 4 million square feet at that time,” said Easterday.

Completion of the paint shop is expected to take 18 to 24 months. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
