KOKOMO,Ind (WISH) – A Kokomo 3-month-old was shaken by her father after suffering from a seizure according to police.

Police say the father Gary Peterson, 26, was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. Our sister station, WISH, reports from their news partner the Kokomo Tribune.

Peterson told police he was caring for his daughter on March 25. Peterson went to make a bottle for the child when she began to cry. When he returned the child was no longer crying and appeared lifeless on the couch. Peterson picked up his daughter and shook her according to police. Police say he denied shaking the baby prior to the seizure.

The child was transported to Community Howard Regional Health then airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. She suffered from a broken rib, a retinal hemorrhage in the back of the eye, and bleeding on the brain. Doctors say the bleeding could result in permanent brain damage.
