JASPER CO., Ind. (WLFI) – A Rensselaer woman is dead following a four-vehicle collision in Jasper County last night.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said a wreck occurred at 7:23 p.m. on U.S. 231 North, near County Road 600 North, which is 10 miles north of Rensselaer.

Officers said it started when one car stopped to make a left turn into a driveway. A pickup was unable to stop and hit the car, which then hit an SUV from oncoming traffic.

That SUV was driven by Melissa Mathew, 40, of Rensselaer, Ind. Officers said Mathew was thrown from the vehicle. She was taken to Jasper County Hospital in serious condition and later died from her injuries at the hospital.

Another driver complained of pain and was also transported to Jasper County Hospital. He has since been treated and released.

Officers said alcohol tests were administered and both drivers had negative results.

The sheriff’s office said the crash scene and roadway were cleared by 9:55 p.m.
