WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Only law enforcement officers will be allowed to carry a firearm on West Lafayette school property following a West Lafayette Community School Corporation board reading on the policy Wednesday evening.
By state law, every Indiana school board must declare who can and cannot carry a firearm onto school property for the upcoming school year. Superintendent Rocky Killion believes there are bigger issues the state and school boards should be concerned about.
“My concern is that we should be dealing with educational issues, not issues about whether or not people can bring firearms on school property,” said Killion. “I believe that firearms should not be on school property.”
The board also had its first reading on a policy regarding procedures to restrain a student that potentially becomes out of control.
Second reading for both policies will either be in June or July.
