CLINTON COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A semi driver is sent to the hospital after his truck catches fire on Interstate 65.

The fire closed the southbound lanes of I-65 at State Road 28 or the Frankfort exit Monday night. Indiana State Police said the driver was able to pull off right at the exit.

Troopers said the driver was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Frankfort for smoke inhalation. They said he tried to extinguish the fire himself, but it became out of control.

“The driver was driving along, said he saw smoke in the cab of his truck. So, he pulled over to the side of the road, got out, looked back and the top of his truck was on fire. He got his handheld extinguisher, tried to fight it a little bit, but it didn’t really do much,” said Trooper Dexter Whitten.

Both lanes of I-65 were closed for about an hour while crews worked to extinguish the fire. The exit was closed for awhile longer while a tow truck removed the semi.
