Lafayette Citizens Band prepares for first concert of the season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – The Lafayette Citizens Band is tuning up for its Memorial Day concert.

Wednesday night, the band had its first rehearsal for the concert Monday evening that begins its season which continues through Labor Day.

Beth Purkhiser, who plays the alto sax, said the Lafayette Citizens Band is the third oldest consecutive running band in the nation.

“It’s just a fantastic opportunity that not every community has for professional musicians, for high school musicians and just people who love to play. They have a chance to get together and perform,” said Purkhiser.

Purkhiser said the band usually plays for an audience of 300 to 500 people. The band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Riehle Plaza.
