LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Memorial Day ceremony at Columbian Park honored fallen soldiers and gold star families.

More than 150 spectators stopped by, including local officials and veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

The ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute.

Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Erika Steuterman said she visited a few gold star families to say thank you.

“The stories are just awesome and makes you appreciate the people. They’re all volunteers now and were not drafted. The people are young service men and women, who run towards the battle not away from it,” said Steuterman.

After the ceremony several people stayed at the park to read the names of those who gave their lives.
