Southwestern gets donation to rebuild after tornado

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – The Tippecanoe School Corporation is receiving a donation to help rebuild after a tornado destroyed Southwestern Middle School.

TSC was awarded $25,000 from the Scott Brand Products company. Scott makes paper products such as paper towels and tissues.

In November 2013, a tornado hit Southwestern Middle School and Mintonye Elementary School causing millions of dollars in damages. Superintendent Scott Hanback said the money will be used to build a new announcer booth for the football field and new signs for the school.

Southwestern student Gracie Slaven said, despite the tornado, her classmates truly came together this year.

“It was tragic at the start. But when the school came together, you could really tell that we were a school and that we had Wildcat pride.” said Slaven.

“A new announcing stand would be awesome because football players would be energetic about it — when we start a new season and stuff. It might help us get a little pumped to go out there and play as hard as we can,” said Southwestern student Jackson Linback

Hanback said students should be back in Mintonye in August 2014 and hopes to open Southwestern sometime in the next school year.
