Downtown ‘painted purple’ to raise awareness for Relay for Life

LAFAYETTE, Ind., (WLFI) – For those who drove through downtown Lafayette Saturday, they may have noticed a few new touches.

Purple bows and purple window paintings were put onto several local businesses and government buildings in preparation for next month’s Relay for Life. This is the second year downtown has been decorated to raise awareness for the event.

Registration chairperson Shirley Mennen says the local Relay for Life has grown tremendously since she first attended in 1997. She says cancer touches every person on some level and encourages others to take action against the disease.

“Even if you have not yet been touched by cancer in your life, you never know when it might and joining this fight against cancer might just prevent that from happening to you,” said Mennen.

Tippecanoe County’s Relay for Life starts at 7 p.m. on Friday June 20 at Jeff High School. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
