Covington man arrested after firing firearm on Wabash River

VERMILLION, CO., Ind. (WLFI) – A Covington man was arrested on multiple charges, including firing a rifle from his boat on the Wabash River.

The arrest comes after an investigation by Indiana Conservation officers on Friday, May 30.

Stephen Winland, 51, was arrested after he was seen shooting a rifle mounted to the front of his johnboat on the Wabash River. Indiana Conservation Officer Deland Szczepanski said he saw the bullets coming from Winland’s rifle ricochet off the water’s surface, which was in close proximity to the I-74 bridge.

Officers recovered a total of 105 empty file casing inside the boat.

Winland was arrested with assistance by the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department with the following charges: Criminal recklessness with a firearm, shooting into or across state water, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
