EDINBURGH, Ind. (WISH) — Emergency personnel were called to the Edinburgh dam on Friday afternoon after five teens were swimming in the water and one was swept over the dam. Two of the teens were rescued by passersby and one is still unaccounted for.

Dispatchers with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department said the call came in around 12:15 p.m. Police said two of the teens attempted to rescue their friend, but were caught up in the water’s current.

A man from Bob’s Bait and Tackle heard the teens screaming for help and was able to pull one out from the water. He then performed CPR on the teen.

Another bystander, Robert Jessie, rushed to help and removed the second teen from the water and performed CPR. Jessie works for Edinburgh Waste Water Treatment; all city employees are trained in CPR. He says he didn’t have to think.

The bystanders said the current was so strong that the teens could not pull each other out on their own.

The girl and boy who were rescued from the water were taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Police said the two were breathing on their own.

As of 3 p.m., dive teams were still searching for one boy in the Big Blue River near State Road 252.

Edinburgh Police, Johnson County Sheriff’s Department’s dive team, Department of Natural Resources, Franklin and Edinburgh fire departments are on scene and conducting shore-based and water searches.

Police have not yet released the identities of the teens.
